CRI and Track Lights — Why Ra80, Ra90, and Ra95 Matter More Than Most People Think

When you review track light specs, you’ll typically see a number like CRI > 80 or Ra 90+ listed alongside the wattage and beam angle. Most buyers scroll past it. This guide explains why that’s a mistake, and what the difference between these values actually looks like in a real room.

What Is CRI?

CRI (Color Rendering Index) is a number from 0 to 100 that measures how accurately a light source renders the colors of objects compared to natural daylight (which scores 100 by definition).

  • CRI 100 — perfect color accuracy, identical to sunlight
  • CRI 80 — colors appear approximately 80% accurate to their true appearance
  • CRI 60 or below — colors appear significantly distorted, dull, and flat

In product specifications, CRI is frequently written as Ra (e.g., Ra 80, Ra 90, Ra 95). These terms are interchangeable.

Why CRI Matters Specifically for Track Lights

Track lighting is used in contexts where the appearance of objects is the point — product displays, artwork, food, textiles, skin tones. Unlike a utility light in a stairwell, a track light is usually aimed at something that needs to look its best.

With low CRI:

  • Red appears brownish and flat
  • Green appears pale yellow
  • Skin tones look grey or lifeless
  • Products appear less appealing than they do in natural light

High CRI reverses all of these. The same objects, under the same fixture wattage, simply look better.

Ra80 vs Ra90 vs Ra95 — Real Differences

Ra 80 — Acceptable Standard

Ra 80 is the minimum standard considered acceptable for general spaces. It is fine for areas where color accuracy is irrelevant.

Appropriate for:

  • Warehouses, utility corridors, car parks
  • Stairwells and back-of-house areas
  • Any space where distinguishing between similar colors is never required

Limitation: Color rendering errors are noticeable to a trained eye, and can be detected by most people when comparing side-by-side with Ra 90+.

Ra 90 — Good Quality, Suitable for Most Spaces

Ra 90 is the threshold where colors begin to look genuinely accurate. Multiple international standards (including EN 12464) specify Ra 90 as the minimum for residential and office spaces where visual comfort matters.

Appropriate for:

  • Bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens
  • Office and meeting spaces
  • General retail

At Ra 90, saturated colors — particularly reds, oranges, and greens — appear noticeably more vivid and true compared to Ra 80. Most people can detect the difference without training.

Ra 95 — High Accuracy for Color-Critical Applications

Ra 95 is the premium tier, approaching the fidelity of natural daylight. The improvement over Ra 90 is most visible in applications where accurate color directly affects decision-making or commercial outcomes.

Required for:

  • Fashion retail and boutiques (fabric colors must match daylight appearance)
  • Art galleries and museums
  • High-end restaurants (food color affects perception of freshness and quality)
  • Cosmetics and jewelry retail
  • Photography studios and video editing rooms

How CRI Differs From Color Temperature

A common point of confusion: CRI and Color Temperature (Kelvin) are independent variables.

  • Color Temperature describes whether light appears warm or cool (2700K warm amber → 6500K cool white)
  • CRI describes how accurately that light renders object colors

A 3000K warm white bulb can have CRI 80 or CRI 95 — it depends on the chip quality, not the color temperature. You need to specify both for the application.
