Many people install track lighting and notice a subtle flicker — not obvious when staring directly at the fixture, but enough to cause unusual eye fatigue after working under it for a while. Sometimes it only flickers while dimming, other times it flickers constantly even at full brightness. The good news is it’s fixable once you know where the problem actually comes from.
Every track light fixture needs a driver that delivers a stable current within a specific range. A driver that’s undersized or low quality will let the current fluctuate slightly and constantly, causing a flicker that may be too fast for your eyes to consciously notice — but your brain still registers it.
Dimmable track lighting needs a dimmer designed specifically for LED (leading-edge or trailing-edge, matching the driver’s spec). Using an older dimmer designed for incandescent bulbs typically causes flicker at lower dimming levels.
When too many fixtures are connected to one track, close to or exceeding the power supply’s maximum rated output, the system can’t deliver power evenly — especially when several fixtures switch on or off at once.
Magnetic track systems rely on built-in electrical contacts inside the rail making firm contact with each fixture. Dust buildup, or a fixture that isn’t seated flush against the rail, can cause intermittent flickering.
Cheap fixtures often lack proper current-filtering circuitry, causing flicker at a frequency too fast to see with the naked eye — but visible as banding when recorded on a phone camera.
Point your phone camera at the fixture in question and record a short video. If you see moving bands or stripes in the footage, the light is flickering at a frequency higher than your eyes can consciously register. Even if it looks steady to the naked eye, this kind of flicker can still contribute to eye strain over time.

Choosing the driver, dimmer, and fixtures from the same system from the start is the most effective way to prevent flicker.
